This is an acoustic folk tune that I wrote and recorded somewhere in Yelm, Wa using Protools in 2001. I sang and played the guitar on this recording.

TRUST AND UNDERSTANDING

I remember My mother crying
in front of the mirror when I was young.
While my daddy stood on the porch screaming at her.
I ran into my bedroom;
hid my head beneath a pillow.
I never understood what all the fighting was for.

But now I know, now that I'm older I think I understand.
All we ever needed in that old house
was just a little trust, trust and understanding sometimes.

I remember when I was young
my grandpa would come over.
He'd bring us groceries and he'd take me on his shoulders.
He'd tell me everything was going to be alright.
"I know you don't have much,
but you don't much to survive."

And now I know, now that I'm older I know grandpa was right.
All we ever really needed to survive
was just a little trust, trust and understanding sometimes.

But words are only words
and they don't mean a god damn thing
after momma left me stranded in the rain.
She went searching for freedom
and freedom is all that she left me.
Oh, freedom was all that she left me.
But what good is freedom anyhow

If you can't find the trust, trust and understanding sometimes?

I remember when I was young,
my best friend would come over.
We'd search for treasures and we'd bury secret letters.
i have never forgotten
all those precious moments,
and how we always stood by each others side.

And now I know, now that I'm older I understand.
What my best friend and i always had
was just a little trust, trust and understanding sometimes.
